Mysore style Yoga Practice

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is a method of yoga practice that was made popular worldwide by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, Karnataka State, India. Pattabhi Jois was a student of Tirumalai Krishnamacharya, who is one of the most influential yoga teachers of the 20th century. Ashtanga Yoga is a method that involves a very precisely ordered sequence of yoga asana, breath and movement, with a very strong emphasis on the spiritual and meditative aspects of yoga practice.

The main form of practice is referred to as Mysore Style Practice. Mysore Style Practice is a highly supervised, self practice class, in which each student learns what is refers to as Vinyasa. That means learning not only a set sequence of yoga asanas or postures, but all the precise number of breaths and movements of each posture. Each student learns at their own pace based on their level of physical and emotional readiness. This style of practice is especially powerful in a spiritual and emotional sense because it requires a higher level of investment and responsibility than most other typical yoga classes. Pattabhi Jois was very fond of saying, “Yoga is not exercise…!”, which was referring to the importance of remembering that the main purpose of traditional yoga practice was never to improve one’s physical fitness or skill, but is a method for profound exploration of one’s spiritual, mental and emotional self. Thus, the method of Ashtanga Yoga is a very serious and daily spiritual discipline that requires a level of care and commitment that is certainly not appealing to everyone.

Students choosing to learn this method are expected to learn the entire method with serious commitment and to practice on a 6 day a week schedule. If you are looking for a casual practice with an irregular schedule, then the Ashtanga Yoga method is not for you! If you are looking for a deeply powerful and transformational practice (physical, mental and emotional) and are willing to commit yourself on a daily basis, then I encourage you to try the method for 2-3 months to see if the method is suitable for you and your lifestyle.

Mysore style Yoga Practice

During mysore classes the students do not follow the continuous instructions of the teacher, they rather absorb in their own practice. There is no exact time for starting the practice. Students may arrive in a given time interval, and practice on their own, day after day. In this way beginners and more experienced practitioners may practice in the same time and space, while benefiting from the group energy. The teacher in the room oversees the practice of the students and assists them very necessary.  From the students’ side, the practice requires openness, trust, dedication and humility.

“Satsang is a soulful togetherness, being in a place, where the truth is discussed.” Swami Shivananda

We will hold a monthly satsang where we will have a discussion about yoga philosophy or a particular scripture about yoga. This sessions form a very important part of  the program. These times together will gives us  the opportunity to explore the timeless wisdom which underlies the yoga tradition. This type of inquiry eventually will lead us to better understanding of ourselves and the world around us. The satsangs will be led by Dani and each session will begin and end with mantra chanting.
